I love this little scene from Rick and Morty because … *well* this created robot is deeply disappointed that his only purpose as outlined by his creator, Rick, is “You pass butter.”
But… some times, you do “pass butter”.
Pass That Butter, Y’all
It was liberating to know that sometimes my job was just passing butter. There are times when the moment requires this. The grandiosity diminishes, and I play the role my wife and kids need for me so that we can thrive together. I believe in my wife; the strength and leadership she wields amazes me daily. And sometimes that belief requires supporting from the sidelines.
This reminds me of a Chris Rock stand-up bit where he talks about how relationships thrive and how they DON’T. Check it out (note - language not safe for work, depending on your work):
If I’m going to play tambourine (or pass the butter), I’m going to do it with a smile because success isn’t a zero-sum game, and I don’t have to be the star of the show to enjoy the show.
I don’t have to be the star of the show to enjoy the show.
This feeling spreads into every facet of my life. I can play tambourine at work. I can play it in friendships. I will slap that stupid piece of plastic and bells like a goofball for my kids.
